Are you keeping up with oil changes?

Routine maintenance is key for ensuring that your car remains in a healthy running condition. While most maintenance is only necessary every 30,000 miles or so, there is one service that is a must much more often: oil changes. Most cars and trucks need an oil change every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but be sure to check your owner's manual to find out exactly how often your vehicle needs it. Here are three reasons why you should never skip an oil change.

Oil changes clean out the motor

As oil circulates through the motor it attracts dirt and other contaminants such as metal shavings that are floating around the engine block. As the oil mixes with this debris it becomes rather thick and is often referred to as sludge. The oil filter will become clogged with this debris as well, preventing the proper flow of oil. The thick oil makes it difficult for the engine to properly operate and it can reduce power and fuel efficiency. When an oil change is completed the old oil is drained, bringing with it all the gunk. The oil filter is also replaced, thus restoring proper circulation and fuel economy.

Fresh oil helps to regulate engine operating temperature

Oil is designed to help regulate the operating temperature of the motor. It is scientifically engineered to absorb heat, while also reducing the amount of heat produced by preventing friction that generates an increase in temps. As oil ages it loses its ability to do these important tasks, thus leaving your vehicle vulnerable to overheating problems. While the cooling system can generally handle most temperature issues, oil circulates through parts of the motor that coolant cannot, for that reason it is integral to ensure the oil is clean to keep the heat down.

Ensures proper lubrication

The most important function of engine oil is ensuring that all of the moving parts of the motor are properly lubricated. I they are not there will be an increase in friction that can cause the harsh wear and tear that will likely result in a need for massive engine repair or possibly an engine replacement.
