What's Leaking From My Car?

What's Leaking From My Car?While gasoline is what you put into the vehicle to make it go, it isn't the only fluid that your car needs to run properly. Your vehicle uses a number of specialized liquids to ensure that the engine, transmission and other systems are able to do their jobs with ease. If you ever notice something dripping from your car be sure to visit a local mechanic as soon as possible. The following are five of the most common types of automotive fluid leaks.

Oil Leak

The most common leak in the auto world is an oil leak. Engine oil is what keeps the moving parts of the motor properly lubricated to prevent excessive friction that can damage components. Oil leaks often appear under the cars as black or dark brown spots, or if they hit water they may appear as a rainbow sheen on top of the puddle.

Coolant Leak

Coolant runs through the cooling system to help regulate the operating temperature of the motor. It is often bright green in color but can also be pink or yellow. Another identifying trait of coolant is its sweet smell, often compared to maple syrup. A coolant leak can lead to overheating and engine damage, so be sure to handle this ASAP!

Transmission Fluid Leak

The transmission utilizes fluids to help keep you shifting smooth. If you find a reddish fluid under the front half of your car it is likely transmission fluid. Low levels of tranny fluid can result in all sorts of transmission problems, including delayed shifting, grinding noises and falling out of gear.

Differential Leak

Differential fluid looks similar to transmission fluid, so the best way to tell the difference is to see where the fluid is collecting. If you find a reddish fluid puddling near the rear wheels, it is most likely to be differential fluid.

Brake Fluid Leak

If you notice a clearish brown fluid near the tires you may want to call a tow truck. A brake fluid leak can make stopping your car incredibly difficult, or even impossible. This leak will often be accompanied by a soft or spongy brake pedal.
