What is a Tune Up?

What is a Tune Up?Routine maintenance is a necessary part of any vehicle's lifetime. Sometimes, though, maintenance isn't part of a routine. If your car or truck is between scheduled services, but doesn't seem to be running well, it could be time for a tune up. This is often necessary on vehicles that don't receive required maintenance on time or have high mileage. A tune up generally consists of completing quick and affordable services that can restore fuel efficiency and engine performance, such as the following.

New Fuel Filter

The fuel filter removes sediment from the gasoline that you put in the car to protect the engine from damage caused by contamination. If the fuel filter becomes clogged it could result in inadequate amounts of fuel getting to the combustion chamber. This could result in a hard starting car, a rough idle or stalling.

New Air Filter

The air filter removes dirt, dust and other debris from the incoming air that is mixed with the gas in the combustion chamber. Should the air filter become so dirty that air can't pass through it your car will respond by burning excessive fuel, called running rich, in order to compensate. This will cause a reduction in your fuel economy.

Replace Spark Plugs

The spark plugs are what ignite that air and fuel mixture. They're fed a small electrical charge, which causes them to spark. If the spark plugs become corroded they can misfire, which means they spark at the wrong time, or not at all. This results in a huge waste of fuel and a poor running engine.

Fuel Injection Cleaning

Another spot where gas can get caught up on its way into the motor is in the fuel injection unit. Dirty or gummy fuel injectors will result in the wrong amount of gas being sprayed into the engine. This of course can cause a poor running motor.

When your car isn't running right it is important that you provide it with the services it needs to restore its performance. Putting off repairs and maintenance will only allow the problem to get worse, and much more expensive to fix.
