Does my car have a suspension problem?

For your car to operate smoothly and safely, you need a healthy suspension. At the first indication of a suspension problem, it'll be best to get to the shop so the issue can be checked out. At Freeport Automotive, our local mechanics are experts at diagnosing and repairing all forms of suspension trouble. By taking action when you notice a sign of suspension trouble, you'll help to keep yourself safer on the roadway.

Warning Signs of Suspension Trouble

A classic sign of suspension trouble is that your car becomes excessively bouncy whenever you go over any little bump in the road. If you hear clunking noises when you drive over rough patches, then you may be dealing with a bad spring. A failing spring can also cause your vehicle to sit lower in the affected corner. Another common sign of suspension failure is that your car feels like it's drifting when going around corners, even when you're driving within the speed limit. Suspension trouble can also cause uneven tire wear. This can consequently cause bald spots to develop on your tires. And if your shocks have become leaky, then they're probably going to need to be replaced.

In many cases, suspension trouble leads to issues related to braking. A bad suspension can cause your vehicle to take longer to arrive at a full stop after you've started braking. Suspension failure can also make it feel like your vehicle is nose-diving while the brakes are engaged.

The Bounce Test

A quick test can help you determine if your suspension is in poor condition. To start, ensure that your car is securely parked and at no risk of rolling. Then go to the front end, press down on it hard, and rock it twice before letting go. Next, repeat this step on the vehicle's rear end. When you release, your car shouldn't rock more than two or three times on its own. But if it does, then there could be trouble with your suspension.
